What recertification actually is

Standard First Aid in Ontario is valid for 3 years. When that 3-year mark approaches, you have two paths to extend your certification: take the full Standard First Aid course again (~14 hours over 2 days, $120), or take the shorter Recertification course (~8 hours over 1 day, $95). Both result in a new 3-year certificate that’s identical for compliance purposes — same issuing agencies (Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Red Cross, or Lifesaving Society), same WSIB approval, same workplace acceptance.

The recert is shorter and cheaper because it assumes you already know the foundation. It refreshes skills, updates you on any current resuscitation or first aid guidelines that have changed, and completes the practical assessment to confirm your technique is still solid.

SFA Recertification vs the full course

Recertification Full SFA Course
Duration ~8 hours (1 day) ~14 hours (typically 2 days)
Price (Life Safe, 2026) $95 $120
Validity of new certificate 3 years 3 years
Eligibility Current card unexpired Anyone
WSIB-approved Yes Yes
Agencies Heart and Stroke / Red Cross / Lifesaving Society Same
Coverage Full SFA scope, refresh format Full SFA scope, complete teach

The single critical eligibility difference: you must have an unexpired card to take the recert. Once your card expires (even by one day), most agencies require you to take the full course again. See our post on expired certificates for what to do if you’ve lapsed.

What an 8-hour recert day looks like

  • Review of CPR for adults, children, and infants — depth, rate, recoil, hand positioning
  • AED use refresh — pediatric and adult pads, special situations
  • Choking response — back blows, abdominal thrusts (Heimlich for adults), modified technique for pregnant or obese casualties
  • Wound care, bleeding control, and bandaging
  • Burns, fractures, and head/spine injuries
  • Medical emergencies — heart attack, stroke, diabetes, seizure, allergic reactions
  • Environmental injuries — heat, cold, drowning, poisoning
  • Casualty management and the recovery position
  • Updates to current resuscitation guidelines if any have changed since your previous certification
  • Written knowledge check + hands-on practical assessment

Where to take SFA Recertification in Toronto

Life Safe runs recertification at all six Ontario venues:

  • Downtown Toronto — 222 Spadina Ave Unit 231 (Chinatown, near Spadina & Dundas)
  • East York — 1774 Danforth Ave (near Coxwell Station)
  • Etobicoke / Junction — 2381 Dundas St W (near Dundas West Station)
  • Hamilton (Dundas) — 59 Kirby Ave Unit 10B
  • Welland — 513 Lincoln St
  • Guelph — Norfolk & Paisley area

The certificate from each venue is identical — same agencies, same WSIB approval, accepted everywhere. Pick whichever venue is closest to your home or work.

What to bring

  • Your current SFA card — some agencies require sight of the unexpired card to confirm recert eligibility
  • A pen and yourself
  • Comfortable clothes — you’ll be on the floor doing chest compressions
  • A water bottle
  • Lunch or cash (recert classes run through lunch — there are food options near every venue)
Tip: Bring the digital PDF of your previous certificate on your phone if you can’t find the printed card. Most Life Safe instructors can verify eligibility from either format.

When you should book

The cleanest timing pattern: book your recert 30 to 60 days before your current card expires. The new 3-year clock starts the day you complete the recert, not on your old expiry date — so booking 30–60 days early doesn’t waste any validity, and it gives you a buffer if something unexpected disrupts your scheduled date.

For the full breakdown on timing, see When to Recertify First Aid: Before vs After Expiry.
