Which course does your program actually need?

Your program coordinator is the final word, but here’s the typical pattern across downtown Toronto’s major institutions:

School / Program Usual requirement Why
U of T Medicine BLS Clinical rotations across UHN, Sinai, St. Mike’s, SickKids
U of T Nursing (Bloomberg) BLS Hospital placement requirement
U of T Dentistry BLS Clinical practice, sedation requirements
U of T Kinesiology / Phys Ed Standard First Aid + CPR C (often) Co-op and clinical placements
U of T Pharmacy BLS Expanded scope of practice including injections
U of T Physical Therapy (MScPT) BLS Clinical placements
U of T Occupational Therapy (MScOT) BLS Clinical placements
U of T Midwifery BLS Clinical practice
TMU Nursing BLS Hospital placement
TMU Paramedic BLS Ambulance and ER placement
TMU Midwifery BLS Clinical placements
TMU Early Childhood Education Standard First Aid + CPR C CCEYA requirement
OCAD studio programs Standard First Aid + CPR C (variable) Studio safety, woodshop, metal shop
George Brown nursing/PSW BLS Clinical placements

Tip: Save your certificate as a PDF as soon as you receive it. Most U of T and TMU placement offices want a digital copy uploaded to a portal before your start date — Quercus, Brightspace, or a separate placement compliance system.

Timing CPR around your academic calendar

BLS is valid for 1 year. Standard First Aid + CPR is valid for 3 years. Most U of T and TMU healthcare programs run 2–4 years, which means you’ll renew at least once during the program. Common timing patterns:

  • August / early September — first-time certification before fall placements begin
  • December / early January — renewal before winter clinical rotations
  • April / early May — renewal before summer co-op or spring placements
  • Reading week — students often use the break for renewal without disrupting clinical hours

The single timing to avoid: scrambling to certify the week your placement starts. Book early.

What to expect at a Life Safe class

  • Bring your student ID (useful for agency record-keeping)
  • Comfortable clothes — CPR is done on the floor
  • A water bottle and snacks
  • Your current card if you’re renewing (some agencies need to see the unexpired card to enroll you in the renewal vs. full course)
  • Lunch or cash — Chinatown surrounds you with food options within 5 minutes

What if your placement starts in 3 days and your card is expired?

It happens. The recovery:

  1. Tell your placement coordinator now. Don’t wait.
  2. Book the soonest available full BLS course (not the renewal — once expired, you need the full course).
  3. The downtown venue typically has classes weekly, but if no date fits in your window, check Life Safe’s East York or Etobicoke venues — same certificate, accepted everywhere.
  4. Upload the new certificate to your placement portal the same day.
